What is search engine optimization (SEO)? It's the ability for your business to be found organically on Google or other search engines like Bing and Yahoo. Be it your website, Facebook Page, or appointment scheduler, it’s important that you can be found when people search for you so that interested new customers can find you. Search Engine Optimization basically means: are you Googleable?

If someone searches for you, your business name, or a business like you in their area - will you show up? Most website builders today include behind the scenes SEO optimization, like ClickEasy, but even with snippets of code baked into your website that work nicely with Google or other, there are a few things that you can do to enhance your SEO, and increase the opportunity to rank highly in search.

SEO can feel like an unapproachable topic to master as a nascent business, but it's quite simple. The two biggest metrics Google uses to figure out if people like your site are click-throughs and time spent on site. The first relates to: Out of every 100 people that sees your headline on Google, how many times do they click? And the second measures how long a person spends on your site before they leave. Keeping those concepts in mind, it's up to you to make sure that the information on your site is engaging and relevant to what people search for. Here are a handful of best practices that you can practice that help to make your website searchable:

1. Easy navigation
Google explores your site like a person would from page to page. Limit the number of pages you use and make each link URL clear. For example: www.mysmallbusiness.com/contact is better than www.mysmallbusiness.com/contact-me-today-and-tomorrow.

2. Use the right keywords
When you write your site, think of the words you want associated with your business and put them front and center.

Think, “if I were looking for my product, what would I search for”? Use those same search terms throughout the content on your web site. For example, if you’re a personal trainer from Boston, include “Boston Personal Trainer” on your front page with words related to fitness, New England, cardio, build muscle, etc.

3. Make your site engaging
Google uses 2 big metrics to figure out if people like your site: click-throughs and time on site. Make punchy and emotional headlines that people feel enticed to click (see #6). And boost time spent on your site by including more content like videos.

4. Use a certain amount of words per page
Attract more visitors as your potential customers search for phrases that may have answers on your site. We recommend having at least 250–400 words on each of your site pages, but do not make your site too busy.

5. Update your information regularly
Creating fresh content, like a new blog post or FAQ page, increases your search-ability. The more often your website is updated, the more often search engines arrange your site ranking. Updating content frequently increase your chances of getting a higher ranking (like showing up on the first page instead of the fourth page of search results).

6. Pay attention to your header and footer
A header is the large, bold text at the beginning of a web page that gives you a summary of what you are about to read.

Each of your website pages should have a unique header and subsequent paragraph text below them. The heading describes the content on the page to help search engines understand what the page is about. You can also use the same keywords that you thought of at the beginning of this article to drive the point home.

7. Increase backlinks to your site.

Backlinks are especially valuable for SEO because they represent a "vote of confidence" from one site to another. Backlinks to your website signal to search engines that others vouch for your content. If many sites link to the same webpage or website, search engines can infer that content is worth linking to. Add your website to your social media profiles and email signature. If anyone gives you press or a shoutout on their website or in an email - please ask someone to include your website.
